Why it's useful
Postpartum underwear and diapers are built for comfort, with higher waistlines and compression, which can help reduce swelling. Some are also absorbent and can catch any leaks.
You can choose underwear or adult diapers, or you may want both. Diapers are great for peace of mind during the early days, when lochia is very heavy. Postpartum underwear is great for for when you're feeling ready to get back to normal but still wants safety layer for the unexpected leak.
What to consider
Your hospital will provide disposable mesh undies. If you like them, make sure to bring the extras home!
Even if you plan for a vaginal delivery, an emergency c-section might still happen. If your budget allows, it's worth investing in postpartum underwear designed for comfort after a c-section (eg, high-wasted; silicone for incision spot).
Leaks are quite likely during the early days. Choose underwear made to withstand leaks so you don’t have yet another thing to worry about -- you’ll almost certainly want to focus on your baby as much as possible!
How many to get
We would recommend getting adult diapers to last the first few days, and a 3-5 postpartum panties depending on your laundry cycle.
