Why it's useful

  • Breastfeeding isn’t always as easy as it looks. It might take  a few tries and some help to teach the baby and yourself.
  • In the first days of breastfeeding, your nipples may feel tender and can also become cracked and even bleed. Using a nipple cream or butter will help reduce any dryness and pain as your body adjusts to this change!
  • Nipple cream is sometimes referred to as "Lanolin cream," but there are great non-lanolin based alternatives on the market.

What to consider

Safety:

  • If you are breastfeeding, you must ensure that all products that touch your nipple are safe for the baby.
  • Double check with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns about using a product on your nipples.

How many to get

Start with one bottle/tube and see how it goes.

Your hospital will provide you with a saline solution to soak your nipples after breastfeeding, as well as nipple cream. Make sure to take both home with you to continue using as needed. If you have leftovers, you can always use these on anything that needs moisturizing, so don’t worry about having extra.
